CHICOPEE, Mass. (Mass Appeal) – If you and your partner have been fighting and you want to resolve your anger, therapy can help. But what can couples expect if they decide to initiate couples counseling? Dr. Rob Robinson, Clinical Director of Family Care Counseling Associates in Wilbraham, shared more about the process.

What to expect from couples therapy: 1. Choose a counselor who has been trained to do couples therapy. Sometimes a good place to start is contacting the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Discuss.

2. While conflict usually brings people into couples therapy, it doesn’t have to be a negative experience. In fact, couples, therapy often involves putting people back on a positive trajectory and re-establishing the fondness and admiration each person had for one another.

3. While it might be easier for the couple to talk to the therapist about their issues, you should expect the therapist to help you learn how to talk to one another in a better way.

4. A couples therapist should not serve as the “judge and jury” in couples therapy, instead the couple should learn how to work out mutual solutions to their problems with one another.

5. You can expect to spend at least one session alone with the therapist to review history and gain perspective, but the bulk of couples therapy should be with your partner.

6. If there were a general outline of what couples might expect from couples therapy it would be: – increase the amount of positive sentiment a couple feels in the relationship – skills in learning how to decrease negativity in couples arguments or discussions – increasing the amount of positivity in couple discussions and problem solving.
